I have spent nearly fifteen years advising high-growth edtech companies and higher education institutions.
I am available for outside/fractional general counsel arrangements, project-specific counsel, or to add flex capacity to in-house legal teams.
Having served as in-house counsel at a US university and technology companies, I bring a unique perspective and skill set to my clients, including:
Intimate knowledge of the higher ed and edtech industries, regulatory environments, and cultures
Experience forming great working relationships with university senior administrators and faculty, growth company executives, sales leaders and account executives, engineers, marketing and communications professionals, and product managers
A deep understanding of the challenges faced by in-house counsel and how an outside lawyer can add the most value
I am a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and admitted to practice in New York state. When not working to serve my clients, I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter, playing golf, cycling, and skiing.
I began my career in the Office of the General Counsel at Lehigh University, a doctoral university in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This was an incredible opportunity for a new lawyer as it provided me the chance to work on a wide variety of matters, including student conduct, Title IV, sponsored research and technology transfer, employment, construction and real estate, non-profit compliance, governance, purchasing, and faculty employment/retirement matters. I also served on the university's Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
After Lehigh, I joined the legal team at Salesforce.org, a reseller established by Salesforce.com to sell its CRM product to higher education institutions and other non-profits. I supported the sales team and counseled the product and marketing teams on beta testing and release of new Salesforce.org services layered on top of the Salesforce CRM, including drafting terms of use for the company's first paid product for higher education clients.
I then led the Partnerships & Degrees legal team at Coursera as the company raised over $200M across two funding rounds, went public, and reached 100M registered learners. My 10-person team was responsible for advising the company on its relationship with content-creating universities and industry partners, ensuring compliance with the various educational offerings on the Coursera platform, and supporting the Marketing and Communications department. I was also part of the core team that managed the company's March 2021 IPO.
I also served as Legal Director to Multiverse US, a UK-headquartered digital education provider, as it expanded its offerings to the US market. I advised the sales team as we closed deals with Fortune 500 companies, led the company's acquisition of a talent intelligence platform, and spearheaded the creation of new legal documents (order forms, end user agreement, privacy notice) within weeks in response to the company’s progression from a human-centric service provider to a SaaS platform with AI-based features.
